What is a stent?

A stent is a cylindrical meshwork made up of alloy (a combination of metals), which is used to maintain the patency of blood vessel of our heart (or any other body part), after it has been opened by balloon inflation during the process of angioplasty (a process to open up closed or narrowed blood vessel). Without such a support, the blood vessel is more likely to collapse back and closed down again.
